Jamael Lett joins the Patriots as a defensive coaching assistant coach following a season at the University of North Carolina as a special teams analyst.
Lett spent six seasons coaching at the collegiate level and two seasons coaching high school football prior to his position with South Alabama. Lett got his start in coaching with Brainerd High School in 2013, serving as defensive coordinator while teaching math at the school. He then coached defensive backs at Davidson High School in 2014 before his first collegiate coaching job with the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2015, working as an assistant coach. Lett spent 2016 with Ohio University as a graduate assistant coach before returning to his alma mater, Samford, in 2017. He spent the 2017-19 seasons as the secondary coach of the Bulldogs, participating in the NCAA-NFL Coaches Academy in 2019, before spending the 2020 season at Akron in the as the secondary coach. From 2021-22, Lett worked as the special teams coordinator/defensive assistant for South Alabama before heading to Chapel Hill.
Lett played defensive back at Samford (2006-10) and recorded 110 tackles, four interceptions, 16 break-ups and two forced fumbles.
A native of Fairfield, Calif., Lett was raised in Mobile, Ala. He earned his bachelor's degree in sports medicine from Samford in 2011 and his master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Tennessee Tech in 2012. He and his wife, Julia, have one son, David, and one daughter, Madison.
