Un partido que fue dominado por las defensas de ambos equipos que contribuyeron para que el marcador se encontrase igualado 3-3 después de tres cuartos de juego.
"Fue duro, ellos hicieron difícil cada jugada, les doy mucho crédito por eso… Afortunadamente nuestra defensa jugó su mejor partido esta noche, fue una victoria increíble", manifestó el QB Tom Brady tras el final del juego.
Un partido ofensivamente deslucido que finalmente se encontró con el touchdown a solo 7 minutos del final, tras una marcha orquestada por Brady, de 5 jugadas y 69 yardas que culminó con una carrera de anotación del RB Sony Michel.
"Todos sabíamos que teníamos que ejecutar nuestros trabajos para poder ingresar en la zona de anotación. Creo que todos hicieron un gran trabajo", dijo el RB acerca de su anotación.
Una marcha anotadora que puso el marcador 10-3.
Brady acabó su faena completando 21 de 35 pases para 262 yardas. El QB de New England pudo trabajar con aceptable tranquilidad tras la buena labor realizada, otra vez, por su línea ofensiva.
Cierto que no fue fácil para que el QB de New England desarrolle su juego aéreo.
Ante la férrea marcación de los defensores rivales, Brady centró su juego en conectar con su arma predilecta y más confiable: Julian Edelman. El receptor de ranura fue clave en muchos momentos del partido, atrapando un total de 10 de 12 pases para 141 yardas, números que le valieron para ser nombrado el MVP del partido.
"Solo se siente increíble haber ganado el juego", dijo Edelman tras enterarse del reconocimiento obtenido.
El juego terrestre de los Pats también hizo su parte contribuyendo con 32 acarreos para 154 yardas. El RB Sony Michel lideró el grupo con 18 acarreos para 94 yardas y 1 TD.
Defensivamente se realizó un trabajo magistral que limitó al explosivo ataque aéreo de los Rams. Su QB, Jared Goff, solo completó 19 de 38 pases para 229 yardas y 0 touchdowns. El joven mariscal sintió la presencia del juego de pass rushing de New England que logró capturarlo en 4 ocasiones (Jonathan Jones, Kyle Van Noy y Dont'a Hightower en 2), el QB fue golpeado en 12 ocasiones.
Vale mencionar el buen trabajo de la secundaria de NE que supo contener con acierto a los explosivos receptores de los Rams, Brandin Cooks (8 de 13 pases para 120 yardas) y Robert Woods (5 de 10 pases para 70 yardas).
Particularmente resaltó la labor de los CBs Stephon Gilmore y Jason McCourty.
McCourty evitó un TD tras interponerse a una recepción de Brandin Cooks, durante el tercer cuarto y Gilmore logró una intercepción a solo 4:24 del final, la cual prácticamente terminó por sellar el destino del partido.
En lo que se refiere al temido juego de carrera de los Rams con Todd Gurley y C. Anderson, este solo sumó 62 yardas en 18 corridas. Una baja producción de los corredores de los Rams que habla bien de la defensa-contra-la-carrera de los Patriots, grupo que dejó lo mejor para el último al realizar una gran actuación frente a esos sólidos corredores del equipo de LA, resaltando el trabajo de los Des Deatrich Wise, Trey Flowers y Danny Shelton.
"Confiamos el uno en el otro y al final hicimos suficientes jugadas para ganar. Para nosotros, de eso se trata", resumió el capitán Devin McCourty el trabajo de toda la defensa.
Finalmente
Como suele ser el caso cuando las defensas se imponen, este partido no fue lucido, el bajo marcador dejó a muchos insatisfechos ya que se esperaba mayor número de puntos por parte de Brady y Goff.
Pero más allá de lo vistoso o no del partido, lo que impera e importa es lo que se consiguió: el triunfo que nos hace campeones. Un sexto título de campeón del Super Bowl que no hace más que solidificar la hegemonía que ha ejercido el equipo de New England en la NFL, en estos últimos 20 años. Una dinastía que, para el deleite de los fans de New England y para el malestar de sus detractores, aún no ha escrito su última página.
