Patriots Make A Series of Roster Moves

The Patriots announced today that they have signed cornerback Carlton Davis III as an unrestricted free agent from the Detroit Lions, tackle Morgan Moses as an unrestricted free agent from the New York Jets, linebacker Robert Spillane as an unrestricted free agent from the Las Vegas Raiders and defensive tackle Milton Williams as an unrestricted free agent from the Philadelphia Eagles. In addition, the Patriots announced that they have traded DT Davon Godchaux to the New Orleans Saints.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots announced today that they have signed cornerback Carlton Davis III as an unrestricted free agent from the Detroit Lions, tackle Morgan Moses as an unrestricted free agent from the New York Jets, linebacker Robert Spillane (pronounced – spuh-LANE) as an unrestricted free agent from the Las Vegas Raiders and defensive tackle Milton Williams as an unrestricted free agent from the Philadelphia Eagles. Terms of the contracts were not announced.

In addition, the Patriots announced that they have traded DT Davon Godchaux to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round draft pick.

Davis, 28, is a veteran of seven NFL seasons with Tampa Bay (2018-23) and Detroit (2024). The 6-foot-1, 202-pounder, originally entered the NFL as a second-round draft pick (63rd overall) by Tampa Bay in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Auburn. He was traded by Tampa Bay to Detroit on March 13, 2024. He has played in 89 regular season games with 88 starts and has registered 376 total tackles, 11 interceptions, 84 passes defensed, 4 forced fumbles, 4 fumble recoveries and 4 special teams tackles. In addition, he has played and started in nine postseason games, including Tampa Bay's Super Bowl LV victory, accumulating 43 total tackles, 6 passes defensed and 1 special teams tackle.

Moses, 34, is a veteran of 11 NFL seasons with Washington (2014-20), the New York Jets (2021, 2024) and Baltimore (2022-23). The 6-foot-6, 320-pounder, originally entered the NFL with Washington as a third-round draft pick (66th overall) out of Virginia in the 2014 NFL Draft. Overall, he has played in 166 regular season games with 158 starts – 155 at right tackle and three at left tackle. In addition, he has played in and started in five postseason games. Last season, Moses played and started in 14 games at right tackle for the Jets.

Spillane, 29, has spent time in the NFL with Tennessee (2018), Pittsburgh (2019-22) and Las Vegas (2023-24). The 6-foot-1, 229-pounder, originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Tennessee out of Western Michigan on May 14, 2018. He began his rookie season on the practice squad before being signed to the 53-man roster in early October and seeing action in two games before being released. He was signed by Pittsburgh on Aug. 31, 2019, and began the year on the practice squad before being signed to the 53-man roster on Nov. 5. Spillane was signed by Las Vegas as an unrestricted free agent from Pittsburgh on March 16, 2023. He has played in 86 regular season games with 50 starts and has accumulated 472 total tackles, 8½ sacks, 6 interceptions for 86 yards with one returned for a touchdown, 19 passes defensed, 21 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and 25 special teams tackles. In addition, he has played and started in two postseason games and has 14 total tackles. Last season with the Raiders, Spillane played and started in all 17 games and finished with a career-high 158 total tackles, 2 sacks and 7 passes defensed.

Williams, 25, was originally a third-round draft pick (73rd overall) of Philadelphia in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Louisiana Tech. The 6-foot-3, 290-pounder, has played in 67 regular season games with 19 starts and has accumulated 132 total tackles, 11½ sacks, 6 passes defensed, 2 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. In addition, he has played in nine postseason games with one start and has added 16 total tackles, 3 sacks, 2 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. Last season, Williams played in 17 regular season games with seven starts and finished with 24 total tackles, 5 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. He played in all four postseason games and finished with 7 total tackles, including 2 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in Super Bowl LIX to help set up a field goal.

Godchaux, 31, is a veteran of eight NFL seasons with Miami (2017-20) and New England (2021-24). The 6-foot-3, 330-pounder, was drafted by Miami in the fifth round (178th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Louisiana State. He was signed by New England as an unrestricted free agent on March 23, 2021.

Godchaux has played in 120 NFL regular season games with 109 starts and has 429 total tackles, 5½ sacks for 32 yards, 3 passes defensed, 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. In four seasons with the Patriots, Godchaux played in 68 games with 67 starts and accumulated 250 tackles, 2½ sacks for 14½ yards, 1 pass defensed, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery. Last season, he played and started in 17 games and finished with 67 total tackles and 1 pass defensed.
