FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots announced today that they have claimed rookie LB Steele Chambers off waivers from Detroit and released rookie LB Jay Person.
Chambers, 23, was originally signed by Detroit as a rookie free agent out of Ohio State on May 10, 2024. The 6-foot-1, 229-pounder, was released by Detroit on June 10, 2024. Chambers began his collegiate career as a running back before switching to linebacker in the fall of 2021. He started in 29 games at linebacker over the last three seasons. In 2023, he finished with a team-leading 41 solo tackles.
Person, 24, was signed by New England as a rookie free agent on June 6, 2024. He began his college career at Appalachian State in 2018 before transferring to Chattanooga. The 6-foot-2, 237-pounder, played in 51 games during his college career and finished with 233 total tackles, 26½ sacks, 6 passes defensed, 9 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries. Last season at Chattanooga, he played in 12 games and registered 56 total tackles, 9½ sacks, 1 pass defensed and 3 forced fumbles.
